Finding Unique Pieces For Your Home

Why Tile Flooring Is Better Than Hardwood

If you want to change the look of one of the rooms in your home, a good place to start is by choosing a new flooring type. You have a number of different options, and browsing some designs online or at a local flooring store can provide inspiration. Many people like the look of hardwood flooring in their homes, but you might also be considering using tile. Hardwood has several advantages, and you may be surprised at the different ways that tile can be a better option. Here are three reasons that tile can be preferable to hardwood.

More Durable

While hardwood flooring offers more durability than flooring products such as carpet, it's still possible to damage in a number of ways. For example, if you spill something on the hardwood and don't notice right away, the water can seep between the planks of wood and cause damage. Similarly, if you're moving heavy pieces of furniture and accidentally drag something on a hardwood floor, it can often suffer scratches and gouges. When it comes to durability, tile can be a better option. Liquid spills won't harm a tile floor, and the hard surface of tile makes it extremely difficult to scratch.

Less Environmentally Sensitive

One of the drawbacks of hardwood flooring is that it's sensitive to its environment. Humidity, in particular, can be an issue. When wood is in a humid environment, the wood fibers will start to expand. Over time, this may cause some of the individual pieces of hardwood to rise above the surface of the floor, resulting in a surface that isn't perfectly flat. Not only will this look undesirable, but it could also be a trip hazard in extreme cases. Tile flooring isn't sensitive to the level of humidity in the home, which means that you won't have this problem.

Minimal Maintenance

Although you'll need to occasionally perform maintenance tasks on a tile floor such as resealing the grout lines, this type of flooring tends to require minimal maintenance. The same isn't necessarily true for hardwood flooring. For example, if a hardwood floor gets a lot of sun, you'll often notice that the finish in the sunniest part of the room can fade. This results in a look that isn't uniform. In such a scenario, you'd need to refinish the hardwood, which is a time-consuming and labor-intensive process that involves sanding the existing finish off the wood and then applying multiple coats of the new finish. Given these benefits, you may feel that tile is the best flooring choice for your home.
